THOUGHTS: The rebuilding of the Calgary Flames, starring general manager Jay Feaster, mainly consists of trading Flames' veterans, and acquiring 2013 1st Round Picks. This is an underrated move, as Calgary has already 3 1st Round Picks for this years' NHL Draft.
If Flames continue to lose, the lottery could give them the chance to draft possibly D Seth Jones, F Nathan MacKinnon, or Jonathon Drouin.
"Ruin for Drouin?"
Calgary, Colorado, Florida and other bottom teams may be able to draft these young prospects if they continue to lose.
But back to the Bouwmeester-trade thoughts.
Jay Bouwmeester is an average defenseman, but is not a defender that Feaster wants on the teams' future roster. Other to-get-traded-players include F Curtis Glencross (supposedly talking with Ottawa), and G Miikka Kiprusoff (Talking with Toronto and one other unknown team).
It was smart to trade Bouwmeester.
The Flames will not win the cup in the next couple of years, but acquiring these prospects and picks are smart moves by Feaster, as these will help the team in the next 3-8 years.
Goodbye, Flames' vets, Kiprusoff may be next.
